Dear friends, as we gather in prayer today, let us take a moment to turn our hearts and minds to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus. In her humility and grace, Mary holds a special place in our faith as an intercessor, guiding us closer to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Together, let us invoke her intercession with the words of the ‘Hail Mary,’ asking for her prayers and support in our journey of faith

PRAYER

O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, intercede on our behalf before your Son. You who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross and shared in His sufferings, we come before you with our humble supplications.

Present to Jesus our needs, our joys, and our sorrows. We ask that through your loving intercession, He may grant us the grace to grow in faith, hope, and love. Help us, O Blessed Mother, to imitate your unwavering trust and submission to the will of God.

Mary, Star of the Sea, guide us through life’s storms. Comfort the afflicted, heal the sick, strengthen the weak, and console the sorrowful. Obtain for us, from your Son, the blessings and graces we ardently seek, especially [mention your intentions here].

O Queen of Heaven, hear our prayers, and lead us closer to your Son, that we may glorify Him now and for all eternity.

Amen

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
That never was it known
That anyone who fled to thy protection,
Implored thy help,
Or sought thy intercession
Was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come,
Before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
Despise not my petitions,
But in thy mercy, hear and answer me.

Amen.

O Holy Mother Mary, as we conclude our prayers, we entrust ourselves and all our intentions into your loving hands. May your maternal intercession bring us closer to your Son, Jesus Christ, the source of all grace and mercy.

Help us to follow your example of faith, humility, and love for God. As we strive to live according to His will, grant us the strength to persevere amidst life’s challenges and to be faithful witnesses of His Gospel.

We ask for your continual guidance and protection, O Blessed Virgin Mary, so that, with your help, we may one day rejoice with you and all the saints in the eternal glory of heaven.

Amen.

Why Ask Mary to Intercede?

Some Christians ask: why pray to Mary when we can go directly to God? The Catholic answer is that we can — and should — go directly to God. But intercessory prayer through the saints (including Mary) does not replace our direct relationship with God; it enriches it. We ask friends and family to pray for us all the time, recognising that the prayers of others add their faith to ours. Mary is the most powerful intercessor in heaven precisely because she is closest to Jesus.

The Second Vatican Council’s Lumen Gentium teaches that Mary’s intercession “does not hinder in any way the immediate union of the faithful with Christ but on the contrary fosters it.” She is a bridge to Jesus, not a barrier.

The Power of the Hail Mary

The Hail Mary combines two scriptural greetings to Mary — from the Archangel Gabriel (Luke 1:28) and from Elizabeth (Luke 1:42) — with the Church’s petition for Mary’s intercession “now and at the hour of our death.”

Saint Louis de Montfort wrote that a single Hail Mary prayed devoutly is more powerful than many prayers prayed without attention. The key is devotion — not mere recitation, but a conscious placing of oneself before the Mother of God and trusting her love.

Mary’s Intercession Throughout History

The history of the Church is filled with examples of Mary’s powerful intercession:

The Battle of Lepanto (1571): Pope Pius V credited the Christian victory over the Ottoman fleet to the recitation of the Rosary throughout Europe.
The Miracle of Vienna (1683): The last-minute relief of Vienna from Turkish siege was attributed to Marian intercession on the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary.
The Miracle of Hiroshima: Eight Jesuit priests living near the atomic bomb’s epicentre survived unharmed, attributing their survival to their Marian devotion and daily Rosary.

A Daily Practice of Marian Intercession

Consider developing a daily habit of Marian intercession:

Morning: “Mary, I consecrate this day to you. Present my intentions to Jesus your Son.”
Before decisions: “Mary, show me what your Son would do.”
In difficulty: Pray the Memorare or three Hail Marys
Evening: “Mary, I thank you for your intercession today. Keep me and my family in your Immaculate Heart tonight.”

Trust the Mother of God. What a son does for his mother, Jesus will do for you when Mary intercedes. She has never failed those who seek her.
