Heavenly Father,

Why We Hold Onto Problems
If surrendering problems to God is so liberating, why is it so hard? Several spiritual dynamics keep us holding on:
Illusion of control: We believe (unconsciously) that worrying and strategising keeps us safe. In reality, it often just exhausts us.
Fear of disappointment: If we trust God and things don’t improve, we feel let down. So we manage our own expectations by managing our own problems.
Pride: There is a subtle pride in handling things ourselves — we don’t want to need help, even from God.
Lack of trust: Deep down, we may not truly believe that God is good, powerful, and interested in our specific situation.
This prayer directly addresses each of these: it acknowledges God’s sovereignty, his love, and invites us into genuine trust.
What Scripture Says About Handing Problems to God
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) — The word “cast” is active and decisive. It’s not “gently suggest your worries to Him” but throw them completely onto Him.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
The Practical Steps of Surrender
1. Name the problem specifically. As you pray, identify exactly what you are carrying. Vague anxiety is harder to surrender than a specifically named fear or problem.
2. Declare your trust out loud. There is something powerful about verbalising trust — “Lord, I believe you are in control of this” — even when it feels difficult to believe.
3. Watch for His response. After surrendering a problem to God, many Catholics find that solutions, insights, or peace come in unexpected ways. Stay alert to how He moves.
4. Surrender again. Surrender is not always a one-time act. You may find yourself picking the problem back up within hours. Surrender it again. And again. God is patient with our process.
The Freedom That Comes From Surrender
Saints who learned the practice of surrender — Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Blessed Charles de Foucauld — consistently report the same experience: the peace that comes from genuine surrender to God is unlike anything the world can offer. It does not depend on the problem being solved; it exists within the problem, because God is within the problem.
