Catholic Prayer of the Day — Thursday, January 8th

As the Christmas season continues, the Church calls us to recognise Christ revealed not only in glory, but in service, compassion, and courage. Today reminds us that faith is lived most powerfully when it becomes action—especially in times of hardship and uncertainty.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray.

Lord God,
You never abandon Your people,
even in times of darkness and trial.
Strengthen our hearts to trust in Your providence
and to serve others with courage and love.

Grant us the grace to be instruments of Your peace,
protectors of the vulnerable,
and witnesses to the hope found in Christ.
May our faith be alive in works of mercy
and rooted in unwavering trust in You.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever

Saint of the Day

St. Severinus of Noricum

St. Severinus of Noricum lived during the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century—a time marked by war, fear, and social breakdown. While others fled, Severinus stayed.

A monk and missionary, he traveled through regions of present-day Austria and Germany, comforting the poor, organizing aid for refugees, freeing captives, and urging both rulers and ordinary people to trust in God.

He warned communities of impending danger, helped relocate entire populations to safety, and lived a life of fasting, prayer, and charity. Though he held no political power, kings and generals listened to him because of his wisdom and holiness.

When he died in 482, the people mourned deeply—not just a holy man, but a protector and shepherd who stood with them in their darkest hour.
