Today, the Church celebrates Saint John of Capistrano, a Franciscan priest and preacher who lived during the 15th century. Known as the “Soldier Saint,” he combined a life of deep prayer with an unshakable zeal for defending the faith. His courage and holiness inspired countless believers across Europe.
On this day, we are reminded that holiness sometimes calls us to be both gentle shepherds and bold defenders of truth.

Prayer to St. John of Capistrano for Courage and Faith
O God,
Who raised up Saint John of Capistrano to give Your faithful people strength and wisdom in defending the faith,
Grant, we pray, that through his intercession,
We may always persevere in the truth of the Gospel and remain steadfast amid trials.
Help us, like him, to be fearless in proclaiming Your name and tireless in serving others for Your glory.

Saint of the Day: St. John of Capistrano (1386–1456)
Saint John of Capistrano was born in Capistrano, Italy, in 1386. Initially a lawyer and governor, his life changed dramatically when he was imprisoned during a political conflict. In that dark cell, John experienced a deep conversion and decided to dedicate his life to God.
After joining the Franciscan Order, he became a powerful preacher and reformer, calling for moral renewal in both the clergy and the laity. His preaching attracted thousands, and he was soon known across Europe for his wisdom, humility, and passion for truth.
John also served as a papal emissary and was sent to reconcile disputes within the Church. Later, when the Ottoman Turks invaded Europe, he rallied Christian soldiers and led them spiritually into battle at Belgrade in 1456, contributing to a miraculous victory. Despite being over 70 years old, his zeal and courage never waned. He died shortly after, exhausted but joyful, whispering the name of Jesus with his last breath.
