Catholic Prayer July 6

July 6 is the feast day of St. Maria Goretti, one of the most beloved martyrs of the modern era. Born in 1890 in Italy, Maria was just eleven years old when she was fatally stabbed by a young man named Alessandro Serenelli after she refused his advances and begged him not to sin. Before she died, she forgave him completely.

What makes her story extraordinary is not only her courage but her mercy. Alessandro was imprisoned, and years later he experienced a dream in which Maria appeared to him, offering him lilies. He converted, repented deeply, and was eventually released. He spent the rest of his life as a lay brother in a Franciscan monastery.

Maria was canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1950, with her mother, brothers, and sisters present in St. Peter’s Square, making it one of the most moving canonisations in history. She is patron of victims of rape, young girls, poverty, and purity.

In 2026, her feast falls on a Monday, the day the Church traditionally dedicates to prayer for the Holy Souls. That pairing of mercy for the living and the dead makes today a powerful day for intercession. The Catechism reminds us that “the communion of saints” unites us with those in heaven, on earth, and in purgatory (CCC 960). Maria now prays for us from her place in glory.

Today’s Catholic Prayer for July 6

Take a slow breath before you begin. Let this prayer rise from your heart, not just from your lips.

Lord God, Father of all mercy,
on this feast of St. Maria Goretti I come before You with a grateful and humbled heart.
You chose a young girl, small in the eyes of the world, and filled her with a courage that shamed the proud and consoled the suffering.
In her final hours she did not curse her attacker. She forgave him. She prayed for him.
Lord, teach me that kind of love. I confess that forgiveness does not always come easily to me.
There are wounds I carry, words that were spoken over me, wrongs that were done to me, and sometimes I hold them close like they are mine to keep.
Help me to release them to You today.

St. Maria Goretti, pray for me. Pray for every person who has been wounded by violence, by betrayal, by the cruelty of another.
Pray especially for the young, who face pressures and dangers that the world tries to dress up as freedom.
Help them to know their own dignity, the dignity that comes not from what they achieve or how they appear, but from being made in the image and likeness of God.

Heavenly Father, I ask You for the grace of purity: purity of heart, purity of intention, purity in the way I treat others and speak about them.
I ask for the grace of mercy: mercy toward those who have hurt me, and the humility to seek mercy from those I have hurt.
And I ask for the grace of perseverance. Give me the strength to keep choosing You, even when it is costly, even when it is uncomfortable, even when I am afraid.

On this Monday, I lift to You the Holy Souls in purgatory. May the mercy that flowed through Maria Goretti flow also to them, bringing them quickly to the joy of Your presence.
All this I ask through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Scripture for July 6

The life of Maria Goretti is a living icon of the Gospel. Three passages in particular shine light on the mystery of her witness.

First, the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 5:8 (RSVCE), “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Maria’s purity was not naivety. It was a fierce, chosen, costly love of God that would not be traded away for anything.

Second, St. Paul’s great hymn of love captures the spirit of her forgiveness: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (RSVCE). Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Maria bore the unbearable and still hoped for her attacker’s soul.

Third, Jesus himself commands what seems impossible: Luke 6:27-28 (RSVCE), “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” Maria did not just hear this teaching. She lived it in her dying breath.

Sit with one of these verses today. Let it be the thread you return to throughout the day whenever your mind wanders.

How to Make This Prayer Your Own

The best time to pray this prayer is in the morning, before the noise of the day rushes in. Find a quiet chair, a corner of a room, even a parked car. You do not need candles or a chapel, though those things are beautiful. You need only your willingness to show up.

Read the prayer slowly. When you reach the line about forgiveness, pause. Let your mind go to the face of someone you are struggling to forgive. Do not force a feeling. Simply say the words and offer them as an act of the will. That is enough. God works with that.

If you have a rosary nearby, you might follow this prayer with a single decade of the Sorrowful Mysteries, meditating on Christ’s own suffering and mercy. St. Maria Goretti had a deep love of the Eucharist and the rosary. Praying in her company today is a real comfort.

Return to this prayer in the evening too. Ask yourself where you saw an opportunity for mercy today, and whether you took it. Bring whatever you find honestly before God. That kind of daily examination is how saints are made, one ordinary day at a time.
