What Did Jesus Mean by “Moving Mountains”?
In first-century Jewish culture, moving a mountain was a proverbial expression for doing something seemingly impossible. When Jesus used this language, he was telling His disciples — and through them, us — that genuine faith in God removes the limits we place on what God can do.
This does not mean that every prayer for a “mountain” to move will result in instant, dramatic change. What it means is that nothing in our lives is beyond God’s power to transform. The mountain does not remain because God lacks the power to move it; it may remain because God is working a deeper transformation within us through the struggle of facing it.
The Mountains of Daily Life
The “mountains” Catholics pray about most commonly include:
Health mountains: Chronic illness, terminal diagnosis, disability
Financial mountains: Debt, unemployment, poverty
Relational mountains: Estrangement, divorce, prodigal children
Spiritual mountains: Loss of faith, habitual sin, spiritual darkness
Professional mountains: Career obstacles, injustice, blocked opportunities
For every one of these, God’s word is the same: “Nothing will be impossible for you.” Not “nothing might be difficult.” Nothing will be impossible.
How to Pray With Mountain-Moving Faith
Believe before you see. Jesus consistently asked people to act in faith before their healing or miracle was visible. The blind Bartimaeus cried out before Jesus had healed him. The ten lepers were told to go and show themselves to the priests — the healing came as they went, not before.
Pray with specific faith. “Move this mountain” is more powerful when you name the mountain specifically. Vague prayer produces vague results; specific, faith-filled prayer aligns your will with God’s and opens you to seeing His specific action.
Pray persistently. The parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8) is Jesus’s explicit teaching that we should “pray always and not lose heart.” Mountain-moving faith is rarely a one-time event — it is sustained, persistent, unwavering trust over time.
What Happens When Mountains Don’t Move
Sometimes we pray with all the faith we have, and the mountain does not move — at least not in the way we expected. Saint Paul prayed three times to have his “thorn in the flesh” removed, and God’s answer was: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Sometimes the mountain God moves is not the external obstacle but the fear within us. Sometimes He strengthens us to climb the mountain rather than removing it. Trust His wisdom in this — He sees the full landscape of your life in ways you cannot.
Your Mountain Is Not Too Big for God
Whatever stands in your way today, God is bigger. Pray this prayer with the boldness of a child asking their father for something they know he is able to give. Be specific. Be persistent. Be trusting. With God, the mountains of your life can and do move.
