Today, the Church honors Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, also known as Mother Cabrini, the first U.S. citizen to be canonized a saint. Her life was marked by tireless service to immigrants, especially Italian families in America.

Despite fragile health, she crossed oceans more than 30 times to bring Christ’s love to those in need. Her story reminds us that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness — and that no obstacle is too great when our mission is love.

Prayer of the Day

Prayer for a Heart of Service

Lord Jesus,
You called Saint Frances Cabrini to spread Your love among the poor, the sick, and the forgotten.
Give us the same zeal to serve others with humility and courage.
Strengthen us when we grow weary, and guide our hearts toward compassion for all in need.
May we, like her, find our rest in Your Sacred Heart and our joy in doing Your will.
Through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Saint of the Day: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

(1850–1917)

Frances Cabrini was born in Lombardy, Italy, the youngest of thirteen children. From her youth, she dreamed of being a missionary, inspired by the stories of St. Francis Xavier. When she applied to join a religious community, she was turned away because of her delicate health. But God had greater plans.

In 1880, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a community dedicated to educating children and caring for the poor. Her mission led her across the ocean to the United States, where millions of Italian immigrants were struggling to survive.

Despite language barriers and financial challenges, Mother Cabrini founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. Her deep trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus fueled her tireless work. Even when facing prejudice and exhaustion, she remained joyful, saying, “I will go anywhere and do anything in order to communicate the love of Jesus to those who do not know Him.”

She died in Chicago in 1917 and was canonized in 1946 — becoming the first American citizen to be declared a saint.
