Almighty ever-living God,
who choose what is weak in the world to confound the strong,
mercifully grant that we,
who celebrate the heavenly birthday of your Martyr Saint Agnes,
may follow her constancy in the faith.

Saint of the Day: Saint Agnes of Rome
Saint Agnes lived in 3rd-century Rome, during a brutal persecution of Christians. She was barely 12 or 13 years old when powerful men tried to force her into marriage and abandon her faith. Agnes refused—declaring boldly that Christ alone was her Bridegroom.
Her rejection enraged Roman authorities. She was threatened, humiliated, and sentenced to death. Yet legend says that even in suffering, God protected her dignity and filled her executioners with awe. Agnes was finally martyred for her faith, becoming one of the youngest and most beloved martyrs of the Church.
Her name, meaning “pure” and echoing the Latin word for lamb, made her a lasting symbol of innocence, courage, and total surrender to God.
