When your strength is exhausted, when the weight of life feels unbearable, when you have nothing left to give — the Catholic faith offers a powerful and specific source of renewal: the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. This prayer to the Holy Spirit for strength reaches out to the Third Person of the Trinity — the divine fire that descended at Pentecost and continues to strengthen believers today.
The Holy Spirit is not an abstract force or a distant theological concept. He is a Person — as personal as the Father and the Son — who dwells within every baptised soul and who actively works to strengthen, guide, and transform us from the inside out.
Holy Spirit, Divine Comforter and Counselor,
I come before You in humble reverence, recognizing Your boundless wisdom and unfailing love. You are the source of all truth, the guide in our journey, and the breath of God’s divine presence.
I ask for Your powerful help in this moment of need. Open my heart to receive Your guidance, that I may discern the path set before me. Illuminate my mind with Your wisdom, that I may make decisions aligned with God’s perfect will.
Fill me, O Holy Spirit, with Your strength and fortitude. In moments of weakness, be my source of courage. In times of doubt, be my beacon of faith. In times of sorrow, be my source of comfort.

Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity — God Himself, equal in dignity and power to the Father and the Son. He is called by many names in Scripture: the Paraclete (“one called alongside to help”), the Advocate, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, the Lord and Giver of Life.
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the frightened, hiding disciples and transformed them into fearless proclaimers of the Gospel. Cowards became martyrs. Fishermen became world-changers. This same Spirit lives within you — received at your Baptism and strengthened at Confirmation.
The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Catholic tradition enumerates seven specific gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to those who are open to them — and this prayer explicitly asks for several of them:
Wisdom — to see life through God’s eyes
Understanding — to grasp the meaning of faith
Counsel — to make good decisions
Fortitude — to face difficulty with courage
Knowledge — to understand God’s will
Piety — a love for God and what is holy

Biblical Promises of the Spirit’s Strength
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) — This famous verse refers specifically to the strength that comes from the Holy Spirit working within us.
“But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
When to Pray This Prayer
Pray to the Holy Spirit for strength:
• Before major challenges — an important meeting, a difficult conversation, a medical procedure
• When exhausted — physically, emotionally, or spiritually drained
• When facing temptation — the Spirit is our primary defence against spiritual weakness
• At the start of each day — many saints made a morning prayer to the Holy Spirit their first act upon waking
• During the sacraments — especially before Confession and Communion
You Already Have the Spirit’s Power Within You
Here is the extraordinary truth: if you are baptised and confirmed, the Holy Spirit already dwells within you. You do not need to earn His presence. You need to open yourself to it. This prayer is an act of that opening — an invitation to the Spirit who is already there to move more freely, more powerfully, more completely through your life.
