Imagine being one of the most powerful nobles in Spain — wealth, fame, and royal favor at your fingertips.
That was Francis Borgia, Duke of Gandía.

But when he was asked to escort the coffin of Queen Isabella to her burial, the lid was opened to confirm her identity — and he was struck to the heart.
The once-beautiful queen’s face had been eaten by decay.
Francis whispered to himself:

Never again will I serve a master who can die.

That single moment changed his life forever.

Lesson

Francis returned home a different man.
Though still surrounded by riches, he began to see them for what they were — fleeting shadows.

When his beloved wife died soon after, his resolve deepened.
He gave up his titles, renounced his lands, and joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), becoming one of the most influential and humble saints of the order.

As a Jesuit, Francis Borgia poured himself into prayer, service, and education.
He became the third Superior General, strengthening the Jesuit missions, founding schools, and guiding thousands toward a deeper relationship with Christ.

He discovered what many never do:

True greatness lies not in being served, but in serving — not in wearing a crown, but in carrying a cross.

Reflection

St. Francis Borgia’s story invites us to examine our own hearts:

  • What “earthly crowns” do we cling to?
  • What are we afraid to surrender to God?

When we finally let go of the world’s empty honors, we make room for the eternal joy that only Christ can give.

He who loses his life for My sake will find it.

— Matthew 10:39
