As we approach the close of October, the Church calls us to reflect on our call to holiness and faithful service. Today’s readings highlight the gift of God’s covenant and the responsibility of hearing His Word and acting upon it.

In a world full of distractions, the saints of today remind us that steadfast devotion and humble perseverance shine brightly.

Prayer of the Day

Loving Father,
You call us into Your friendship and invite us to follow You with faith and boldness.
Grant us the courage to hear Your voice and respond with trust,
the humility to serve others as You served,
and the perseverance to walk in Your ways even when the path is difficult.
May we live each day in the light of Your Word and the strength of Your Spirit.
Through Christ our Lord.

Amen

At age 40 he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) not as a priest but as a lay brother. His ministry was simple yet profound: he served as porter (doorkeeper) at a Jesuit college in Majorca for over forty years.

Through that humble service, he became a living witness of prayer, compassion, and holiness. His care for students, visitors, and the religious community earned him great respect.

He died on October 31, 1617, and was canonized in 1888

His life challenges us: you don’t have to be in a prominent position to be holy. In the ordinary tasks of life — greeting the stranger, listening to the one in need — holiness unfolds.
