Born in Italy as Domenico Gangala, James grew up in poverty but was filled with enormous hunger for learning and holiness. After becoming a Franciscan, he was mentored by the famous St. Bernardine of Siena and soon became one of the greatest preachers of the era.

James traveled on foot across Italy, Germany, Bosnia, and beyond—preaching repentance, fighting corruption, helping the poor, and establishing economic reforms that protected families from abusive lenders.

He slept only a few hours a night, fasted constantly, and spent long hours in prayer. Despite his intense lifestyle, he was gentle, patient, and deeply compassionate.

Miracles followed him: healings, conversions, and even protection from assassins who tried to stop his preaching.

He died peacefully at age 85, after a lifetime of tireless devotion to God and service to humanity.
