Today, the Church pauses to remember St. Paul the Hermit, one of the earliest Christian monks. As Jesus continues His ministry of healing and mercy in the Gospel, we are reminded that God meets us both in the crowds and in the silence.

O God,
who inspired Saint Paul the Hermit
to lead a life of surpassing holiness,
grant us, through his intercession,
that, renouncing ourselves,
we may love you above all things.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

Father of Christian Eremitical Life
Born in Egypt around the year 228, St. Paul the Hermit fled into the desert to escape persecution. What began as refuge became a lifelong vocation. For over 90 years, he lived in prayer, silence, and radical trust in God.
Clothed by nature, fed by God’s providence, and sustained by deep communion with the Lord, Paul lived unseen by the world—but fully known by Heaven. His life inspired generations of monks, including St. Anthony of the Desert, who later visited him and spread the monastic tradition.
St. Paul reminds us that intimacy with God is not found in noise—but in surrender.
