Lord Jesus Christ,
You who broke down the walls of enmity and made us one in the Spirit,
teach us to walk in Your peace.
Where division rises, let us bring unity;
where hatred grows, let us plant forgiveness;
where despair reigns, let us bear hope.
May our lives reflect Your reconciliation, and may our hearts be always ready to welcome You when You knock at our door.

Saint John Paul II, Pope (1920-2005)

Born Karol Józef Wojtyła on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland, John Paul II grew up amid loss and occupied land. He lost his mother, brother, and father by the time he was twenty-one, and the Nazi occupation of Poland drove him to work in a quarry and chemical factory while studying in an underground seminary.
Ordained a priest in 1946, Karol served students, taught philosophy, and embraced the struggle for human dignity under communism. He became Archbishop of Kraków, then Cardinal, and in October 1978 was elected the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years. Within days he proclaimed to the world: “Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ!”
His 26-year pontificate was marked by tireless global travel (he visited over 100 countries), dialogue between religions, commitment to young people through World Youth Day, and a firm stand for the truth of the Gospel. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and forgave his attacker. His legacy includes a new Catechism of the Catholic Church and the call for every person to holiness.
John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, and was canonized April 27, 2014. Today his feast day invites us to remember his courage, compassion, and missionary heart.
