Who Was Saint Padre Pio?
Francesco Forgione was born in Pietrelcina, Italy in 1887. He entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order at age 15, taking the name Padre Pio. In 1918, he received the stigmata — the wounds of Christ — and bore them on his body for 50 years until his death in 1968. He was the first stigmatised priest in the history of the Church.
During his lifetime, Padre Pio was credited with numerous miraculous healings, bilocation, reading of souls, the fragrance of sanctity (the scent of roses or tobacco that reportedly accompanied his presence), and prophetic knowledge. He heard confessions for 10–15 hours daily and was renowned for his ability to see into the hearts of those who came to him.
Pope John Paul II canonised him in 2002, calling him “a brother full of humanity and faith who knew how to accompany people in their suffering.” His feast day is September 23rd.
Padre Pio’s Own Experience of Suffering
